What Forging the Future Means to Chris Beem ’87
Many alumni can happily credit life’s successes to the relationships and skills they developed as young Delts. Chris Beem ’87 attributes his own strong career to his opportunities as a young Beta Phi brother as well as the guidance and mentorship of several Delt alumni— including the late Paul Falkenbach ’80.
“Paul was a mentor and friend,” Chris said. “He had a passion for giving back to the fraternity by guiding, coaching, mentoring, and teaching young men how to become successful in their chosen profession and in life. Paul helped so many, including me, and I wanted to ensure the great work he did continues into the future.”
That’s why Chris made a generous pledge to Paul’s endowment within the Forging the Future campaign, which supports the continuing education of Delt youth and advisors—just like Paul supported his brothers for many years.
A Network of Friends
Chris came to Ohio State from the Philadelphia area, not knowing anyone at the school. He chose Beta Phi for the chapter’s focus and athletics and quickly bonded with members, like his pledge brother Gary Marcinick ’86 and his big brother, Butch Harton ’85. Daily activities, sports, and other events helped foster a feeling of family; Chris is lucky to call R. Brian Stump ’86, and several other Delt brothers, his closest friends to this day. He accepted many leadership roles, including recruitment chairman, Chief Justice of the OSU Greek system, and chapter president. “It was at times a challenge but also a very rewarding experience,” he said.
After graduating, Chris began volunteering with the House Corporation Board on financial matters. He later became a full member of the board and has served there ever since. That involvement helped Chris keep in touch with alumni and work with undergraduate members on the chapter’s needs. He’s also been lucky to work with several brothers throughout his career as vendors, suppliers, or personal advisors.
Keeping In Touch
All this made Chris’s campaign pledge an easy choice. “I gained so much from my years as a member of Beta Phi, and I wanted to give back and pay it forward so that other young men might also reap the benefits of active involvement in the chapter and from programs offered through this campaign.” Chris encourages brothers to support within their means and stay connected to Delt however they can, such as attending tailgates, staying in touch with friends, and becoming alumni volunteers.
Chris lives in Powell, Ohio, and can be found at OSU football games in the fall. He also enjoys reading, biking, and spending time with his two kids and grandson. To connect with Chris, email him at chris.beem@englefieldoil.com.
